Incarcerated Tory Lanez appeared in court on Thursday to appeal his 10-year sentence. He was ultimately denied bond by a Los Angeles County Superior Court judge during his hearing. According to Meghann Cuniff, a legal affairs journalist, the Canadian rapper requested bail in the felony conviction for the shooting of Megan Thee Stallion in 2020.
Following his sentencing, Lanez took to Instagram to maintain his innocence, stating that he wouldn’t “stop fighting till I come out victorious.” He added that while he took responsibility for “verbal and intimate moments that I shared with the parties involved,” he was innocent of the shooting itself.
“Regardless of how they try to spin my words, I have always maintained my innocence, and I always will,” he wrote. “This week in court, I took responsibility for all verbal and intimate moments that I shared with the parties involved. In no way, shape or form was I apologizing for the charges I’m being wrongfully convicted of. I remain on the stance that I refuse to apologize for something that I did not do.”
Lanez added that he’s “faced adversity my whole life, and every time it looked like I would lose, I came out on top.”
“This is nothing but another moment where my back is against the wall, and I refuse to stop fighting till I come out victorious,” Lanez continued. “Tough times don’t last; tough people do. To my family, friends and umbrellas, thank you for your continued support. See you soon.”
According to Cuniff, Lanez’s lengthy sentence was handed down by LA County Judge David V. Herriford last month. In a motion submitted in late August, Lanez’s new attorney, Crystal A. Morgan, argued that Lanez should be granted bail so that he can continue to support his family who “heavily rely upon him for care.” Morgan’s recently filed motion argued that he “doesn’t pose a threat to the community.” She also argued that her client would maintain his sobriety once released on bail. He will also have no contact with the Houston rapper.
The latest update followed the news that Lanez turned down a 4-year plea deal as he fought to maintain his innocence. Entertainment lawyer Michael Freedman shared that there is almost no possibility the request would be granted to Lanez.
“Generally, to get bail pending appeal, you have to show a substantial likelihood of prevailing on appeal, which often means a substantial likelihood you can show error by the trial judge,” the entertainment lawyer said. “So it’s pretty rare for the trial judge to find the defense can make this showing about the same judge’s own rulings, especially after the judge has already denied post-trial motions raising those same arguments.”
