On Thursday, actor Danny Masterson was given 30 years to life in prison after being convicted of raping two women in the early 2000s.

Masterson, best known for his role as Steven Hyde on the popular sitcom “That 70’s Show,” was handed a lengthy sentence by Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Charlaine Olmedo after the victims gave statements to the court detailing their resulting trauma.

“Mr. Masterson, you are not the victim here. Your actions 20 years ago took away another person’s voice and choice. Your actions 20 years ago were criminal, and that is why you are here,” Olmedo said before announcing the sentence.

The 47-year-old, who did not speak during the hearing, will serve a pair of 15-year sentences consecutively and must also register as a sex offender. Masterson’s attorney, Shawn Holley, request for concurrent sentences was denied.

The actor was originally on trial for a trio of forcible rape charges in 2022. However, the jury deadlocked on all three counts, leading to a mistrial in November. 

The retrial, which began in April, concluded in May with two guilty verdicts and another deadlock on the third. The prosecution dismissed the third charge, but the alleged victim was given a voice during the hearing.

Masterson and all three women were members of the Church of Scientology at the time of the alleged attacks. The women, who have since left the organization, said the church discourages reporting to law enforcement and actively hinders timely justice. Two of the women have a related civil case pending against Masterson and the church.

Alison Anderson, who is representing the two women in the civil case, applauded her clients for holding “a ruthless sexual predator accountable.” She reiterated plans to hold the Church of Scientology responsible as well, saying “they are not stopping” with Thursday’s sentencing.

Actress turned Scientology critic Leah Remini called the ruling an indictment “against Scientology, its operatives, and its criminal leader, David Miscavige.”

Holley announced plans to appeal, citing substantial unspecified “errors which occurred in this case.” 

“Though we have great respect for the jury in this case and for our system of justice overall, sometimes they get it wrong. And that’s what happened here,” her statement continued

Deputy District Attorney Reinhold Mueller said the prison term ahead for the actor was “a long time coming.” 

Masterson is currently awaiting to be transferred to a California state prison and is under 24-hour surveillance, according to TMZ.
