The fallout from Saturday evening’s wild brawl in Montgomery, Alabama continues as social media reacts to the mayhem.
The Guardian reported that the entire incident, which was also captured on multiple cell phone videos, started when a Black dock worker asked a white family to move their pontoon from a restricted area. The worker took it upon himself to remove the vehicle when his requests were ignored. In response, several members of the family punched and shoved the worker to the ground. Moments later, multiple onlookers from a nearby riverboat rushed to his defense, escalating the situation into a near riot.
The chaotic scene has sparked a frenzy on social media as users across several different platforms rush to like, comment, and create memes about the event. Hashtags such as #AlabamaBoatBrawl, #MontgomeryBrawl and #RiverboatBrawl have been trending for days, with reactions continuing to pour in. Between the folding chair, a teenager swimming toward the action, and the enthusiastic crowd, there was plenty of material to work with.

However, not all of the cyber activity has followed the same comedic tone as some, including actor/comedian Marlon Wayans, have questioned the violence and have been particularly upset by the weaponized chair.
Montgomery Mayor Steven L. Reed issued a statement on his X account, formerly known as Twitter.
“Several reckless individuals for attacking a man who was doing his job. Warrants are being signed and justice will be served,” he said, condemning the situation.
Immediately after breaking up the melee, Montgomery Police detained several individuals. According to USA Today they have also issued four active warrants with the possibility of more to come as investigators comb through the footage.
