Nearly 30 years after Tupac Shakur was gunned down near the Las Vegas strip, an arrest has been made.

According to a report from the Associated Press, Duane Davis, also known as Keefe D, was arrested for his alleged role in the drive-by shooting. Early Friday, Las Vegas Metropolitan Police took Davis into custody on suspicion of murder. An indictment is expected later in the day.

In July, the home Davis shares with his wife was raided in search of evidence in the 27-year-old crime. Detectives recovered computers, photographs, a hard drive, .40 caliber bullets and a magazine that featured the late rapper.

On Sept. 7, 1996, Shakur and Death Row Records head Suge Knight were stopped at a red light when a white Cadillac pulled alongside them and opened fire on their BMW. Shakur was hit four times and died six days later at the University Medical Center of Southern Nevada. Knight was grazed and escaped serious injury. 

It’s been widely believed that Keefe D’s nephew, Orlando Anderson, sought retribution after being assaulted by Shakur and several members of Death Row Records’ entourage in the MGM Grand earlier in the evening. The altercation stemmed from a rivalry between the South Side Compton Crips, a street gang Anderson and Davis were members of, and the Death Row-affiliated Mob Pirus. 

Anderson was killed in an unrelated gang-related shooting less than two years later.

For years, Keefe D has publicly stated that he played a vital part in Shakur’s death in numerous interviews and the 2019 memoir “Compton Street Legend.” Davis said that he sat in the passenger seat of the Cadillac and handed his nephew the murder weapon as they approached Shakur and Knight’s BMW.
