There’s yet another twist in the YNW Melly re-trial: a judge has removed the lead prosecutor just days before jury selection starts.

The assistant state attorney, Kristine Bradley, was set to lead the prosecution. Still, he was taken off the case after the defense attorneys claimed she had been accused of being willing to lie, as reported by the South Florida Sun-Sentinel. It was a decision to make sure there was no bias or conflict of interest in handling the case. Also, in that ruling, Judge Murphy stated that state attorney Harold Pryor and two of his deputies tied the case will not be removed from the case. This comes after they were accused of engaging in a “cover-up.” Murphy urged that the evidence presented showed that they were truthful.

Melly’s legal team claimed that the case’s lead detective, Mark Moretti, asked a sheriff’s deputy to lie about being with him when he executed a search warrant. At the same time, he used excessive force while obtaining Melly’s mother’s phone. Assistant State Attorney Michelle Boutros came forward to address the alleged transgression. After an investigation, officials concluded that Bourtros’s statements contradicted what she told others, leading to Moretti not being wrong. 

By state law, prosecutors have until the end of next week to start the jury selection process.
