Ice Spice’s latest accomplishment proved that she’s truly the “people’s princess!”
On Tuesday, Sept. 12, the Fordham Road rapper took home the best new artist award at the 2023 MTV VMAs. As she accepted the award, she became emotional and started to cry.
“Thank you so much. Thank you, MTV. Oh my God, this is so cool,” she said emotionally. “I just want to thank my Munchkins. I love you guys so much.”
“I want to thank my manager, James. I want to thank my producer, Riot, for making the best music with me,” she continued. “Shout out to all the other nominees in this category. I want to thank my label 10K and Capitol for always supporting me. And, of course, God. Without God, none of this would be possible.”
Spice won the prestigious prize over other new artists, including GloRilla, Kaliii, Peso Pluma, PinkPantheress, and Reneé Rapp.
Ice Spice’s EP Like…? was released earlier this year, and the EP’s track “Gangsta Boo” with Lil TJay, launched her debut appearance on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.
The big win is followed by the “Princess Diana” rapper being named Billboard’s 2023 rookie of the year.
She gained notoriety when her song “Munch (Feelin’ U)” became a smash hit on TikTok. However, hip-hop fans deemed Spice as a “one hit wonder” and claimed the song lacked actual bars.
Despite being labeled as a “one hit wonder” she went on to prove her haters wrong when she collaborated with PinkPantheress on “Boy’s a Liar Pt. 2,” Nicki Minaj on “Princess Diana” and “Barbie Girl,” and Taylor Swift on “Karma Remix.”
When she collaborated with Swift on “Karma,” Spice surpassed Nicki’s previous record for the largest streaming debut by a femcee in Spotify history.
