The wife of Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman is now a free woman following over two years in custody.
On Wednesday, Emma Coronel Aispuro left a halfway house in Long Beach, CA, to begin four years of supervised release. Prior to being transferred to the halfway house in May, she was an inmate at FMC Carswell in Fort Worth, Texas.
In June 2021, the former beauty pageant contestant pled guilty to three federal charges related to her husband’s multi-billion dollar drug trafficking operation. She was sentenced to three years in prison, which was later reduced to 31 months.
Aispuro was arrested the previous February at Dulles International Airport and remained in custody until her release from the halfway house.
El Chapo is currently serving a sentence of life plus 30 years in a Colorado Supermax federal prison. His Sinaloa Cartel is believed to have smuggled hundreds of thousands of kilos of cocaine, heroin, methamphetamine and marijuana into the US. The organization has also committed a wide range of crimes, such as murder, kidnapping, torture and bribery.
The couple wed in 2007 and have twin daughters that are now 12 years old.
