Doja Cat’s ‘Paint the Town Red’ Ends Hip-Hop’s Year-Plus Drought

Doja Cat is making her mark on the music charts and making history while doing it.

The “Kiss Me More” rapper is the first hip-hop artist in over a year to make it to the top spot. It took 54 weeks, to be exact, for this to happen.

Doja Cat’s “Paint the Town Red ” helped end the drought for hip-hop on the Billboard Hot 100, and it’s the first rap song to get this far on the charts in 2023. The last song that achieved this feat was Nicki Minaj’s “Super Freaky Girl.” The Irony of this is that the two women collaborated on what would be Doja’s first No. 1 song on the charts, “Say So,” in 2020.

Keeping the momentum going with her second No.1 record, the Grammy-winning singer dropped the tracklist for her fourth studio album, Scarlet. Doja let her fans know on Instagram that the 15-track project will have no features from any other artists.

Later this month, Doja Cat will get on the road to promote Scarlet, making it her first headlining tour. The “Scarlet Tour” will hit up a total of 24 cities, including Los Angeles, Brooklyn, Dallas and Chicago. Doja will have support from Ice Spice and Doechii throughout the tour.
