Contrary to previous reports, Desiigner is not required to register as a sex offender, according to the rapper’s lawyer.
Defense attorney Ryan Garry spoke with People to deny that his client, whose real name is Sidney Selby, will have to add his name to the registry as a condition for his sentencing for an indecent exposure charge.
“Regarding the issue of Mr. Selby registering as a sex offender, many news outlets have incorrectly stated that he is required to register as an absolute condition of his probation. They are wrong,” Garry told the outlet.
Since the incident occurred on an aircraft, Selby’s crime fell into federal jurisdiction.
“The sentencing judgment states that if the State of California or some other government entity requires that Mr. Selby must register as a sex offender, then he must,” Garry said. “After significant research and consultation with lawyers in California,” the 26-year-old will not have to register.
The “Panda” artist pled guilty to the charge after masturbating on a flight from Japan to Minnesota in April. On Thursday, he was sentenced to 120 hours of community service, two years probation, fined $5,000 and barred from possessing any firearms.
